Windows Server 2008 R2 now available on DreamSpark.com (free for students)

I just noticed Microsoft made available Windows Server 2008 R2 on their Dreamspark website.

Dreamspark.com is a site for college and high school students to get many of Microsoft's products. You just need an .edu e-mail address

I believe that 2008 R2 is based off the Windows 7 code base, so it is the latest and greatest server product.

NOTE: R2 is 64 bit -only- (they will not have a 32 bit version). So your must have a processor that has the 64-bit extensions.

Installing Windows XP in just 10 minutes

Here, I am going to the secret, that I got from one blog. I found that we can bypass the 39 minutes of time while we are installing Windows XP.

We all know that after loading the file or copying the file from the boot disk to temporary space the system requires a first time reboot.

Now, if we press Shift+F10, that open up command prompt, type TASKMGR, then the task manager will open and there we will find that a process is running named setup.exe in the processes tab.

Now our task is to make the priority of this process to MAXIMUM (Realtime) by right clicking on that.

We are done.

Find your XP installed in 10 min., with tolerance of 2 min.

First of all:

What is MSDNAA?

Microsoft presents the MSDN Academic Alliance (MSDNAA) Program.

What is an SDC file?

The SDC file format is a Secure Download Cabinet file. It is an encrypted and compressed file format for Internet delivery of the products.

How to decompress .SDC files?
Keep the "unpacksdc.exe" in the folder which has "*.sdc" files
Usage: unpacksdc.exe filename.sdc C:

Merging and Unpacking multi-part SDC files.

Usage: copy /b filename_1.sdc+filename_2.sdc filename_merge.sdc

Again, unpacksdc.exe filename_merge.sdc C:

SDC unpacking problems.
Use SDC unpacker without skipcrc switch, so the file is validated before unpacking
If you get "CRC error", it means that the file is broken and unpacker would not be able to unpack its contents (but try decompressing the files with "skipcrc").
Try downloading the file again, maybe using other source.

In todays world, most of the anti-viruses are able to remove the viruses but what about tha changes caused by them to the system...

Here, I am posting some changes which anti-viruses do not undo and we have to do them manually...

These are not discovered by me...but i collected them one-by-one and can be applied using diff methods possible...These r practically useful by most of the users and easily applicable...

PS: gpedit.msc is not available in Windows XP Home Edition

Command Prompt Disabled
SOLUTION 1:
----------------------------

Start->Run=>gpedit.msc
OR
C:/windows/system32/
find gpedit.msc double click on that

goto user Configuration
select Administrative Templates
select System
on the right pane double click on "prevent access to the command prompt"
in the popup select "disabled" click on apply
then ok......

SOLUTION 2:
---------------------------------------------------

Open Registry Editor (Regedit.exe) and navigate to:

[HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwarePoliciesMicrosoftWindowsSystem]

In the right-pane, double-click DisableCMD and set it's data to 0

SOLUTION 3:
--------------------------------------

Click on Start >> Run and in the Open box type:

REG add HKCUSoftwarePoliciesMicrosoftWindowsSystem /v DisableCMD /t REG_DWORD /d 0 /f

Type it in correctly. It is better to copy and paste. Then click OK.

Solution 2:

Go to Startmenu->Run and enter regedit there and press ok to execute regedit (registry editor). There you will see a tree like structure of folders like stuff in left. There navigate to registry entry HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionPoliciesExplorer
and on right side you will see many values.

Out of these values in right see a value (key) named â€œNoFolderOptionsâ€�. Double click after highlighting it, if there under value box it is written 1 then change it to 0 and press enter. Exit the registry editor and close any folder and open again to see the settings. If you want to disable Folder Options then set the value of â€œNoFolderOptionsâ€� to 1 (and to retrieve it back change it to 0).

Simplest Virus ? The Fork Bomb

A virus (as you know) is a piece of code that does something that it should not. It is a common misconception that you need a vast skill set to make these and that they are extremely complex however in reality they are as simple as sin to make which is why they are so damn annoying.

A Fork bomb is considered to be the smallest writable virus in the batch language and it is capable of being annoying and if launched on a home computer however on a server will probably result in a crash.

A fork bomb creates two instances which each create two instances and so on..the processes recursively fork, this "forks" the processor and jamm it completely until a crash occurs.
Here is how to make it
open up notepad and type:

and save it as fork.bat Yep.. its a virus of just 5 characters :P .
On double clicking this file, it will lead to total CPU jam by opening about 500+ process of command prompt.

So Dell, is Ubuntu safer than Windows or not?

You may recall how Dell dug itself into an almighty hole last month, after proclaiming that Ubuntu was safer than Windows, before swiftly changing its mind and declaring itself more neutral than Switzerland.

Dell's Ubuntu site has a "Top 10" list of "things you should know about Ubuntu."

This morning, Dell appears to have taken down the Ubuntu page, although a copy of the original site (PDF) was saved by The VAR Guy website, in case Dell decided to pull it.

Well, now the PC makers had time to think the matter through, another page has appeared on the Dell website, condensing the whole Windows vs Ubuntu debate into about 100 words.

From Dells perspective the choice is clear. You should choose Windows if (and I swear I am not paraphrasing here):

* You are already using WINDOWS programs (e.g. Microsoft Office, iTunes etc) and want to continue using them
* You are familiar with WINDOWS and do not want to learn new programs for email, word processing etc
* You are new to using computers

And you should plump for Ubuntu if:

* You do not plan to use Microsoft WINDOWS
* You are interested in open source programming

So, just to get this highly complex argument straight: you should use Windows if you have already used Windows or have never used Windows. And you should only think about Ubuntu if you are an open-source programmer. Got it?
