Jolicloud - Best Netbook Remix

Jolicloud 1.0 - The Anywhere OS

Jolicloud is not a traditional OS. It was built for netbook users to leverage the Cloud and make their life easier.

Jolicloud is designed to work with as many different netbooks as possible. In fact it is one of the only distros to support the GMA500 out of the box. It is based on 9.04 - but do not worry about this older version number, Jolicloud has some of its own repositories to provide more up to date packages to its users.

Why Linux Mint over Ubuntu..?

I have been an Ubuntu fan for some time now. No matter which distro I tried, I always found it lacked some feature or another and I eventually made my way back to Ubuntu. Then I found Linux Mint. Linux Mint is a derivative of Ubuntu which is a derivative of Debian (Debian = Ubuntu and Ubuntu = Linux Mint). Why use a derivative of Ubuntu (or Debian for that matter) instead of just using the original product?

Simple: The derivative is better.

What makes Linux Mint better than Ubuntu you ask..?

There are a few things that come to mind:

1.) The System Menu - Mint menu is based off of the Ubuntu System Panel. It gives a menu that is similar to a KDE style menu in the Gnome desktop.

2.) The Update Manager - I cannot tell you the number of times I have had a working Ubuntu system when a kernel (or some other) update comes along and foobars things. Mint Update Manager nicely divides all updates into different levels of importance so you can toggle which ones you would like to receive (by default, kernel updates are off)

3.) Default Software - I like Mints choices of default software. It contains OpenOffice and Firefox, like most distributions, but beyond this it is still shipping with Pidgin as the default IM client, Thunderbird for email, and XChat for IRC communication.

4.) Media Codecs, Flash, and Java by Default - This has to be one of my favorite things about Mint. With a fresh install (or off the live CD), Mint will play just about any media format you can throw at it, stream youtube (or hulu) videos, and run any java application you might have laying around.

5.) Default Theme - Mints green skin is much nicer to look at as opposed to Ubuntus brown/orange layout.

Do you have any reasons I did not list here for choosing Linux Mint over Ubuntu..? If so, feel free to share...!

Ripping DVDs on Linux with HandBrake

HandBrake is an open-source, GPL-licensed, multiplatform, multithreaded video transcoder, available for MacOS X, Linux and Windows.

It is my preferred application at this current point in time for ripping video from DVDs. It provides a very sleek GUI that is easy to navigate and intuitive to use. It supports queuing media tracks and x264 encoding to .m4v files. Also worth mentioning is that HandBrake is not included in the Ubuntu repositories, however it is still FOSS.

Netrunner - Best KDE Distribution

Netrunner is an Ubuntu-based distribution with a focus on desktop computing. It boasts a carefully tuned KDE 4 desktop with many integrated GNOME applications to offer users a selected mix of popular and powerful applications.

I really like a lot of the features KDE has to offer - however many of the applications most KDE distros ship do not feel as complete as their Gnome counter parts. So while Netrunner uses KDE it still uses nautilus as its file manager, Firefox for its webrowser, and VLC for its media player. It also includes media codecs, java, and flash. One thing I dislike about Netrunner though is that it uses Knetwork manager - which I feel is horrid compared to nm-applet. The latest release of Netrunner is based on 10.04.

Zorin OS - Best Windows Like Ubuntu Distribution

Zorin is designed with the intention of making a recent Windows convert feel at home. The default skinning and applets look decently close to Windows 7 and this can easily be changed to look like Windows XP. Zorin includes flash and media codecs by default and the most recent version is based on 10.04.

Zorin OS is an Ubuntu-based Linux distribution designed especially for newcomers to Linux. It has a Windows-like graphical user interface and many programs similar to those found in Windows. Zorin OS also comes with an application that lets users run many Windows programs. The distributions ultimate goal is to provide a Linux alternative to Windows and let Windows users enjoy all the features of Linux without complications.

Zorin OS is a Linux operating system, just like Mac or Windows. Zorin OS is built on the Linux architecture so it is completely open source, which means that anyone can modify anything in the operating system to suit their liking. Zorin OS is based on Ubuntu Linux which is the most popular Linux operating system in the world. But Zorin OS is different, Ubuntu is quite hard to use for Windows users. However, Zorin OS is the solution to that problem, it makes it easy to use for current Windows users. But that is not it, as well as being open source it is also:

* Safer than Windows, all the Linux distributions have nearly no risk of getting malware
* Faster than Windows, its tested to be more than twice as fast as Windows Vista (with the effects on)
* More customizable than Windows
* Built with the help of the community, so even you can contribute to the Zorin OS project!
* More advanced as new releases take place 6 months after previous ones
* And best of all, its free!

You also do not need to worry about Windows because you can choose to have Zorin OS installed alongside Windows, which also means that you that can boot up Windows instead of Zorin OS. Furthermore, you can also access all your Windows files on Zorin OS with the file browser. You can even run your Windows programs on Zorin OS using a program called WINE. Also you need not worry about support for Zorin OS as Canonical (the people who make and support Ubuntu) will support it, as Zorin OS works in the same way as Ubuntu Linux as it is based on it.
